Can you apply for a passport online?
Unfortunately, it is not yet possible for U.S. citizens to apply for a passport online. Although, you can download and complete all the forms and information you will need to submit your
application for a new or replacement passport, you will still either have to send the application in the post or visit an approved facility such as selected post offices or some libraries to submit it there. You will have to apply for a new passport in person if any of the following applies:
- You wish to apply for your first U.S. passport
- You are younger than 16 years of age
- Your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were aged under 16
- Your previous U.S. passport was either lost, stolen, or damaged
- Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago
If any of the above criteria applies to your application then you must complete Form DS-11. When you apply for a U.S. passport with Form DS-11, you must also submit the full payment for your passport alongside your application in person. For a full passport book the total fee due is $135 ($110 for the application and a $25 “Execution Fee” which needs to be paid separately). This sum can be paid via check and money orders but the $110 application fee cannot be paid via credit or debit cards (whereas the “Execution Fee” can).
It is much easier to submit an application for a U.S. passport by mail and it is possible to do this in some circumstances, such as if you are able to submit your most recent passport at the time of application or your passport remains undamaged. Other conditions that will allow you to send your application through the post include whether your most recent passport:
- Was issued when you were over 16 years old
- Was issued within the last 15 years
- Was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order)
(If you are eligible to apply for a new U.S. passport via mail then you can complete the DS-82
Good news if you are renewing your passport with the DS-82 form as only the $110 application fee is required and should be submitted alongside the application. Again, only checks and money orders are accepted.
You may think that online applications for a U.S. passport would be possible if you are outside of the United States, but unfortunately you will be required to apply in person at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Unfortunately, each Embassy and Consulate has a different process for applying and paying for your passport so you will need to contact your nearest Embassy or Consulate for more
information. Travel Visa Pro offers a range of passport services whether you need to replace, renew or apply for a passport for the first time, from within or outside the United States.
