When it comes time to renew your US passport, you may be dreading the experience. After all, it’s something you should only have to deal with every ten years, like renewing your driver’s license. Nevertheless, it’s essential to check on your travel documents prior to a big trip. If it turns out you do need a new passport book, it wouldn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with the process.

Passport Renewal Application Form Details

All those needing a form to renew passports can use DS-82 from the US Department of State. However, there are certain restrictions. Your current US passport must have been issued in the last 15 years, not be damaged enough that it would affect acceptance at immigration, and not be a child’s passport (valid for five years). In those cases, applicants would have to use form DS-11 in person at a regional passport office.

Form DS-82 is fairly straightforward as a passport renewal application form: six pages long, four of which are instructions and two which must be mailed in. Standard information like your name and address are required, but name changes can be processed with the appropriate legal documents (due to marriage, divorce, etc.). In addition, you should have your previous passport number and expiration date handy, along with any travel plans if you want to expedite your application.

Is there any other form to renew passports?

In some cases, it may be necessary to prove you owe no child support or back taxes. Failure to pay these can result in your passport renewal application form being sent right back. Other than that, travelers should provide a passport-sized photo, a check or money order for $110 made out to the US Department of State (different fees if applying in person or seeking expedited service), and their most recent US passport. All forms to renew passports are limited to DS-82 and DS-11.
