Tips for First-Timers Getting Passport Photos

Finding a passport photo that’s acceptable to the US Department of State is essential if you don’t want to have your travels delayed by an improperly completed application. It’s best to look straight into the camera with both eyes open and mouth closed in a neutral position. Any clothing covering the head and hats are not allowed unless they are for religious or medical reasons and have appropriate documentation. As of November 2016, the US Department of State no longer allows travelers to wear glasses in passport photos.

Travel Visa Pro will take your picture for any current applications, but using the extra photos later on isn’t recommended unless they’re for applications being processed in the next six months so they reflect your most recent appearance. All photos taken at TVP in Seattle will be against a white background and cut to 2”x2” for applications.

What if I lose a lot of weight or get a new tattoo?

What should you do if your appearance changes drastically in the next ten years while your passport is still valid? Even if you make the right choice taking your passport photos in our office, you might think it’s okay to show up to passport control at SeaTac looking completely different. Not exactly…

Growing a beard or longer hair doesn’t affect your passport validity, nor does changing your hair color. However, significant changes to your face including piercings, tattoos, or a large amount of weight loss/gain can be grounds for immigration rejecting your passport. In addition, no uniforms or camouflage clothing may be worn.
