Expired U.S. passports are invalid for international travel. But in the past, the U.S. government allowed its citizens to fly back home with such passports. Such passport holders had to prove they were U.S. citizens and had to take direct flights back home. This leeway allowed many people to fly back home with invalid passports if their passports were in good condition and in their possession. But can you rely on this precedent? Can You Travel Back to the U.S. With an Expired Passport?
Up to 30th June 2022, U.S. passport holders could use expired passports to return to the U.S. They, however, had to meet the following conditions:
- The flights had to be direct or have short transit periods,
- The passports must have been full validity,
- The passports should have been in good condition, not lost or stolen, and
- The passport holders could prove they were U.S. citizens.
This grey area allowed many people to return home with expired travel documents for a while. But after 30th June 2022, this changed, barring people from traveling back with expired passports.
What Should You Do If Your Passport Expires Abroad?
Can you return to U.S. with expired passport? Direct flights back home with expired passports are no longer an option. So, what should you do? The U.S. government advises its citizens to contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for a new passport. Please note that passport applications abroad are often subject to delays that can drag on for weeks or months.
When to Renew Your Passport
Waiting until your passport expires can result in you being stuck abroad. Moreover, it can result in visa denials owing to limited validity. Thus, the best option is to renew your passport nine months before it expires. You only need the following documents:
- A complete DS-82 form,
- Two passport photos, and
- Your most recent passport.
