Car Title is a legal document issued by the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) of the state where the car is purchased and usually contains information identifying the car, the license plate number, name and address of the registered owner. Where the car is being financed or leased, the title usually lists the lienholder who holds possession of the title until the auto-loan is paid. Hence, a car title establishes proof of ownership of a car.
When registering or selling a car in a foreign country, an apostille may be requested on the car title. The car title must be signed and copy certified within the United State or at a U.S. Embassy.
