When traveling, having a copy of your passport is always advisable. It serves many purposes, including helping you replace a stolen or lost passport, visiting tourist attractions, or even leasing a car (you leave a copy with the car company). But while it serves these and more purposes, does it equate to a passport? Can you travel with a copy of your passport?

Can You Travel With A Copy Of Your Passport?

The U.S. passport office recommends that all travelers have a copy of passport for travel. This copy should contain the passport number, making it easy to replace lost, stolen, altered, or damaged passports. But can you use the copy as a travel document?

A copy of passport for travel is different from a passport. Your passport copy will not be a valid ID whenever you travel, whether domestically or internationally. Instead, you must present a passport that meets the following conditions:

  • It should be in good condition: Altered and damaged passports are unacceptable and thus require replacements.
  • It should have enough blank pages: All passports used on international flights must meet the minimum visa page requirement in the destination, not including the endorsement pages. If your passport has run out of pages, you can renew it for more pages.
  • It should meet the minimum validity requirements: Each destination dictates that passports must have a certain validity threshold, e.g., six months. Any passport that falls short of this requires a renewal.
  • It should not have been reported lost or stolen: When you report a passport lost or stolen, the U.S. passport office invalidates the passport. Using a previously reported passport results in being flagged, derailing your travel plans.
  • It should be physically available: You may wonder, “Can I travel with a copy of my passport on domestic flights?Per ID guidelines, only the original passport is acceptable at immigration or airline checking points. As such, using your copy of passport for travel will not work.

How to Make a Passport Copy?

While you cannot use your copy of passport for travel, it can help you replace a lost, damaged, or stolen passport. When making a copy, ensure it is colored, shows the vital information (especially the passport number), and is clear. Also, have digital and physical copies.
