Belgium is the ideal place to eat, drink, and make memories. But must you have a passport to do all these things? Yes! U.S. citizens traveling to Belgium must have passports that meet the criteria below:

1. The passport must be valid three days past the departure date from the Schengen Area. Note that this refers to your final departure date and not that from Belgium. So, if you plan on visiting other Schengen countries, ensure your passport will meet this requirement in all these regions. Otherwise, if your passport has expired or has limited validity, you must renew it.
2. The passport must have at least two blank pages. A passport that has run out of blank pages is invalid as it does not leave room for entry and exit stamps. Note that you should comply with the blank page rules for all the Schengen countries you will visit. You can get extra pages by renewing your most recent passport.
3. The passport must be in good condition. Immigration authorities and airlines assess passport conditions before allowing you through. While they will look the other way for normal wear and tear, they do not accept damaged or altered passports. You must replace it and get a new one to qualify for international travel.

Do You Need a Visa to Go to Belgium?

Belgium is part of the Schengen Agreement, allowing tourists and businesspeople to tour the country without a visa. This visa-free period applies to a 90-day stay within a 180-day window and is subject to assessment by the immigration authorities. It also allows U.S. citizens to transit through Belgium without getting a transit visa. Note that only full-validity passport holders can enter Belgium under such terms.

All other travel purposes and durations require a visa in the D category, which you can convert to a residency permit once arriving in Belgium. They are as follows:

1. Student visa: This permit allows you to stay in Belgium as a student while you pursue studies in a local institution. Usually, the permit has a six-month validity. But you can always get an extension if the school vouches for you, enabling you to stay in Belgium until you finish your course.
2. Work visa: U.S. citizens heading to Belgium for employment require this visa type. In most cases, you must have sponsorship from your employer. But in others, the work contract and job offer are enough to justify your visa application.
