Do You Need a Passport to Go to Cyprus?
The Republic of Cyprus requires all U.S. citizens to present passports when entering and departing the country. The passport must meet the conditions below:
- It must have at least six months of validity. Moreover, if you will visit other countries in the Schengen Area, you must ensure your passport has at least three months of validity past your departure date. If your passport has expired or needs more validity, you should renew it before leaving the U.S.
- It must have at least two blank pages for the entry stamp. A passport that does not have enough pages or is full is invalid for travel to Cyprus. Thus, you must get extra pages by applying for passport renewal.
- It must be in good condition. Passports are subject to wear and tear over the years, which is understandable. However, immigration authorities and airlines will not accept a passport with significant damage or alteration. Such a passport will necessitate a passport replacement.

Do You Need a Visa to Go to Cyprus?
While Cyprus is part of the European Union, it does not follow the Schengen Agreement. Even so, it allows U.S. citizens to travel as tourists or businesspeople for 90 or fewer days without a visa. As such, you will not need to process a visa for any 90-day stay within a 180-day period.
Any other travel needs or durations will necessitate a visa as follows:
- Category A long-term visas: These apply to self-employed individuals in the agriculture sector. They must prove a capital investment of €430,000.
- Category B long-term visas: Individuals with a capital investment of €350,000 in the mining industry and a Cyprus permit can apply for this visa.
- Category C long-term visas: People engaging in trade can get this multiple-entry visa valid for one to five years. You must have a relative permit to your income generation and a capital of at least €260,000.
- Category D long-term visas: Self-employed individuals in a profession or science can get this visa type. It allows them to generate income from an underserved field. They must, however, prove they have sufficient funds to back their stay.
- Category E long-term visas: U.S. citizens employed permanently in Cyprus can get this visa. But they must assume a role that will not disadvantage Cyprus residents by creating undue competition.
- Category F long-term visas: People who want to live in Cyprus without working can get this visa. They must have enough funds to support their stay and their dependents (if any).
These visas allow U.S. citizens to stay for more than a year and accord them the perks of living like residents.
Can U.S. Citizens Travel to Cyprus?
U.S. citizens can travel in and out of Cyprus with valid passports and visas (if required). However, you should note that Cyprus has two parts governed by different authorities. U.S. citizens accessing the southern part should only do so via Larnaca and Paphos airports and Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos seaports. Entry via the Ercan Airport is not legal per the Southern Cyprus entry requirements. Noting these travel requirements is integral to exiting the country without facing any hurdles.
Cyprus Entry Requirements for U.S. Citizens
Anyone who wants to access this visa-free stay must provide the following documents on arrival:
- A valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages,
- A return or onward sea or flight ticket,
- A travel itinerary or documents proving your business travel plans,
- Evidence of sufficient funds, and
- Proof of accommodation.
