Can U.S. Citizens Travel to El Salvador?

Visiting El Salvador as a U.S. citizen should be easy if you have a valid passport. Thanks to the Central America Border Control Agreement, you can enter El Salvador and stay for up to 90 days without processing a visa. Please note that:

  1. This visa only applies to travelers who want to embark on short tourist stays. Once you arrive in El Salvador, you must buy a tourist card with a 90-day limit.
  2. People born in El Salvador do not need to buy tourist cards. Your U.S. passport should show that you were indeed born in the country.
  3. Exceeding the term on the visa is illegal. If you wish to stay longer than 90 days, you can always request a 30-day extension. However, this is not guaranteed, and you can end up cutting your stay short.
