The time left on your passport can either help or hurt your subsequent visa applications. For example, if your passport has 4 months before it expires, you may be denied visas to some regions, which require at least 6 months of validity. Knowing how long your passport will last can help you avoid visa denials based on limited validity.

How Long Does U.S. Passport Last?

Wondering how long does U.S. passport last? Your passport data page shows you the date of your passport’s issue and when it will lose its validity. Use these dates as a timeframe to help you prepare for passport renewal even before your passport expires. Ideally, you should renew your passport at least 9 months before it expires. That gives you enough time to get a new passport before you venture out of the country. Plus, it helps you get visa approvals in almost any country.

How Long Do Passports Last for Adults?

If you got your passport when you were 16 and older, your passport should last for 10 years before it loses its validity. Every time you renew it, you will get 10 additional years. Thus, you will only need to renew your passport once every 10 years and can do so before it expires.

How Long Does a Passport Last for a Minor?

Children’s passports have a validity of 5 years. These apply to passports issued to anyone under 16. When the passport expires, and the child is not 16, you will need to apply for another child’s passport, which will also have a validity of 5 years.

How Long Does a Temporary Passport Last?

Temporary passports apply to people who must travel urgently and do not have the time to process regular passports. Examples include:

  • People whose passports get lost, stolen, or damaged abroad,
  • People whose passports expire while they are abroad, and
  • People who have ailing or deceased immediate family members abroad.

Due to the emergencies surrounding their issuing circumstances, these passports are often out within a day or two but can take as long as a week. They allow you to embark on urgent trips like returning to the U.S. safely or visiting an ailing loved one in a foreign country.

To get a temporary passport, you need to provide the following:

  1. Proof of identification, like a driver’s license,
  2. Proof of citizenship, e.g., a birth certificate,
  3. Evidence that you must travel in the next 3 business days,
  4. A travel itinerary that shows your travel plans,
  5. A filled-out application form, and
  6. Passport photos.

A temporary passport lasts for the timeframe you will need it to travel. For example, if you need to visit an ailing loved one for two weeks, your passport will last just as long. That’s because the immigration authorities will take it once you are back in the United States. Thus, you can only use the temporary passport once and for the time you need it. Sometimes, the passport can be valid for as long as a year. But again, it depends on the reason behind issuing the passport.

Temporary passports, while handy, are not always acceptable in some countries. So, you may find that your host country does not accept such documents and can have trouble completing your trip. Ultimately, you will need to get a regular passport so you can travel internationally again without such hassles.

How Long Does an Emergency Passport Last?

Emergency passports, like temporary passports, are not regular passports. So, as much as you can get one, you should always refer to your host country’s entry and exit regulations. Some regions do not allow emergency passport holders to enter their borders. If that’s the case, you can always talk to our TVP team about getting you a new passport or renewing your existing passport in a few days.

These passports are often issued to travelers stuck abroad with expired, lost, stolen, or damaged passports. They also suffice for people in the U.S. who have life-or-death emergencies and must leave the country in the next 3 business days. To get such a passport, the applicant must:

  • Present evidence of the life-or-death emergency or proof of urgent plans to return to the U.S.,
  • Fill out the application form and attach the required documents, e.g., proof of citizenship and identification, passport photos, etc., and
  • Submit a travel itinerary that depicts the urgent travel plans.

An emergency passport is often processed within 3 days though this timeline is not standard and can sometimes be longer than stated. A week is often the best bet, but you can always cut back on this time by trusting TVP to expedite your application so you can have your passport in as little as 1 day!

Emergency passports are only valid for the required timeframe and can last up to 1 year. Immediately you are back in the United States; you will need to forfeit the passport and apply for a regular one. Ergo, if you leave the country for a life-or-death emergency and return after 3 months, your passport will be valid for 3 months.

How Long Does a Renewed Passport Last?

Renewed adult passports last 10 years before they expire. Each time you renew your passport, you get 10 additional years. Children’s passports cannot be renewed. Instead, if the passport expires and the child is still under 16, you will need to apply for a new passport.
