Before getting a passport, you must present a complete passport application form and several types of ID to prove your eligibility. But what forms of identification do you need for a passport? The required documents depend on your age, whether you have had a passport, and if you are renewing a passport. Let’s consider the options:

What Forms of Identification Do You Need For a Passport?

Anyone applying for a passport must prove they are U.S. citizens. Depending on your age, other documents may also be necessary, as follows:

a. People Aged 15 And Below

Minors require the following identification documents:

  • Proof they are U.S. citizens: Acceptable documents include expired passports, U.S. birth certificates, certifications of birth, certificates of citizenship, and consular reports of birth abroad.
  • Photo IDs of their parents or guardians: These vary from driver’s licenses to military IDs.
  • Two recent passport photos.

Proof of parental relationship is also necessary, e.g., a birth certificate or adoption decree.

b. People Aged 16 And 17

People in this age range can apply for passports if they can prove parental awareness. You will need the following:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship: Acceptable documents include expired passports, U.S. birth certificates, certifications of birth, certificates of citizenship, and consular reports of birth abroad.
  • Their photo IDs or those of their parents or guardians: These vary from driver’s licenses to military IDs.

Two recent passport photos are also mandatory.

c. Adults

Adults are eligible to get new passports or renew their current ones if they provide a valid ID. So, what ID do you need for a passport?

  • New passport applicants: You need proof of U.S. citizenship and a photo ID, e.g., a birth certificate and a driver’s license.
  • Renewal applicants: You can use your previous passport as proof of citizenship and photo ID if it is in good condition. If not, you must apply for a new passport using the documents above.

Like with other applicants, you must include two recent passport photos in the application.

Do You Need an ID To Get a Passport?

Every passport application, whether for a minor or adult, must accompany enough paperwork to support it. But do you need an ID to get a passport? Yes! You must present your proof of U.S. citizenship and a photo ID (yours or that of your parents or guardians if you are under 18). The passport office cannot process any applications that lack a valid ID.
