But first, you must understand all the Indonesia entry requirements to ensure your trip is a success. What do you need?
Visa Requirements
Indonesia entry requirements are so strict that visitors who overstay their visas or use the wrong visa categories can end up in jail. But do you require a visa, and if so, what category should you get? All US citizens traveling to Indonesia must have visas that relate to their travel purpose and duration, as follows:
1) Visa on arrival: US citizens can obtain a visa on arrival, which is valid for up to 30 days if they are visiting Indonesia for the following reasons:
- Tourism,
- Government duties,
- Business meetings,
- Goods procurement,
- Business meetings, and
- Transit
To get this visa, you must justify your travel purpose and present the following supporting Indonesia visa requirements:
- A valid passport,
- A return or onward travel ticket,
- Evidence of enough funds to cover your stay, and
- Proof of accommodation.
Note that while visas are available upon arrival, there are no guarantees, and you must thus prepare adequate documentation to support your stay. Moreover, you cannot work with this Indonesia visa for U.S citizens.
2) Visit Visa: This permit allows you to remain in Indonesia for up to 60 days for non-work purposes. Examples of qualifying categories include short-term training, visiting relatives, tourism, and business meetings. You can apply for this before leaving the US – the requirements are similar to the visa on arrival.
3) Multiple Visit Visa: Suppose you want to travel to Indonesia a lot. You can get this visa, which allows you to travel to the country regularly for a year, provided you do not exceed 60 days during each visit. Categories are similar to those of the visit visa.
4) Limited Stay Visa: People traveling for long periods or for other reasons not covered by the visas above must get a visa from the Indonesian embassy or consulate before leaving the US. Visa categories include:
- Business,
- Work,
- Student,
- Family,
- Retirement, and
- Digital nomad.
In each of these categories, you must justify your travel purpose by presenting supporting documentation, e.g., someone applying for a digital nomad visa must prove they get their income outside Indonesia and have enough money to fund their stay. Besides these supporting documents, you must present the following Indonesia visa requirements:
- A valid passport,
- A complete visa application form,
- Evidence of enough funds to cover your stay,
- Proof of accommodation, and
- Two recent passport photographs.

Passport Validity
All US citizens traveling to Indonesia must have passport books. But not all passports are acceptable. Below are the passport requirements to enter Indonesia:
- You must have an ordinary passport: You cannot get a visa on arrival with an emergency passport. If your passport is not ordinary, you must apply for a visa before arrival, and getting a visa will be contingent on the assessment at the embassy.
- Your passport must have at least six months of validity past the arrival date: If your passport has expired or has a few months remaining, you cannot use it to enter Indonesia and will get turned away. Longer validity periods may be necessary for some visa types. It is thus advisable to renew any passport that has fewer than nine months of validity.
- Your passport must have at least two blank visa pages: Customs officials will not stamp a passport that does not have sufficient visa pages. Moreover, if you have an onward ticket, they will not allow you into Indonesia if your pages are not enough for your next destination. - Your passport must be in good condition: After years of travel, your passport may show signs of wear and tear, e.g., slight folding in the pages. However, it should not have physical signs of extensive damage or alteration, e.g., missing pages. If your passport is not in good condition, you should replace it to avoid getting turned away on arrival.

Health Requirements and Vaccination

- Vaccination status: While the Indonesian government recommends getting vaccinated, you cannot get turned away for lacking a vaccination certificate.
- COVID status: Travelers no longer need to fill out health status forms before going through customs.
