Brazil Visa Application

Brazil has always been a top tourist destination for U.S. citizens. After all, it boasts thousands of beautiful beaches, has some of the most incredible carnivals, has warm weather coupled with friendly locals, and offers some of the most captivating views in the world. And for a long time, U.S. citizens traveled to this ecological haven with just a passport. However, entry requirements for Brazil from January 10th, 2024 will change, all U.S. citizens heading to Brazil will need a valid Brazil visa. We show you how to get a visa for Brazil by meeting the minimum requirements for each visa option:

Brazil Visa for U.S. Citizens

U.S. citizens traveling for business, tourism, cultural events, or in transit did not require visas. Instead, they would show their passports and other justifying documents and access the country. But from January 10th, 2024, anyone, including tourists, must have a valid Brazil visa to enter the country. Below are the options available per the Brazil travel requirements in 2023:

1. The Brazil Visit Visa: Anyone traveling for a short visit can apply for the sub-categories below:

   –  Tourist Visa: This option applies to you if you will visit Brazil for recreation, to visit family or friends, to attend a cultural or research event, or to participate in unpaid sports competitions.

   –  Business Visa: You should get this visa if you will be in Brazil to attend business events or embark on any business transactions, e.g., to attend a business conference.

   –  Transit Visa: If you will transit through Brazil to another country, you might need a transit visa. However, this only applies to people who will leave the international airport area or clear immigration.

Besides business visa holders, the rest cannot engage in paid activities in Brazil. So, how long is a Brazil visa valid for? The above visas last 90 or fewer days.

2. The Brazil Temporary Visa: This long-term Brazil visa for U.S. citizens applies to people who must stay in Brazil for over 90 days. The visa options are as follows:

   –  Work Visa: People working in Brazil can get this visa type if their employers have sought approval from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor.

   –  Student Visa: You can get this permit if you have enrolled in a Brazilian school and must be in the country to pursue your studies. Researchers can also get this visa type.

   –  Family Reunion Visa: If your family member is a resident or citizen of Brazil, this visa type allows you to join them, e.g., a child can join their parent.

   –  Retirement Visa: Retirees can settle in Brazil if they meet the temporary residence requirements in the country.

   –  Digital Nomad Visa: Freelancers can get this Brazil visa for U.S. citizens, which debuted in January 2022, to earn a living in Brazil if they work for companies outside the country.

Anyone with the above visa types must register with the Brazilian Federal Police within 90 days of arrival. You will also receive a migration registration card, which will cap your stay per your purpose. Exceeding the allowable duration can result in penalties. But luckily, you can always renew your card.

Diplomatic and official Brazil visas are also available.

How to Get a Visa for Brazil?

Regardless of the purpose of your trip, you must undertake a Brazil visa application, get approved, and have your visa before you show up at immigration. Here is how to get a visa for Brazil:

  1. Contact the nearest Brazil embassy/ consulate and inquire about the Brazil visa requirements for U.S. citizens. Note that they are not the same as they depend on your visit’s purpose. For example, a retiree seeking a retirement visa will need more documentation than a tourist staying for 50 days.
  2. Compile the required documents per your visa type: Immigration authorities are strict about documentation and will not allow you to get a visa unless you check all the boxes.
  3. Make an appointment with the nearest Brazilian embassy/ consulate: You can do this online in most cases.
  4. Fill out the Brazil visa application form: You should answer all the questions honestly and attach digital copies of all the required documents, including your passport photo. You will receive a confirmation, after which you should print the receipt and attach your visa photo to the designated space.
  5. Attend your interview and present all the required documents as you pay the required processing fee.

You should receive your visa by mail or through your agent if you have met all the requirements.

Brazil Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens

Since the Brazil visa requirements in 2023    depend on your visa type, you should compile all the required documents before filling out your Brazil visa application. What do you need?

At the minimum, all Brazil visa applicants must have the following:

  1. A valid passport: You must have a passport with at least six months of validity. It should be in good condition, have at least two blank pages, and should not have been reported stolen or lost.
  2. A visa application form receipt: After filling out your Brazil visa application form, you will get a receipt, which you must present to the consulate or embassy to get your visa. Print this, attach your passport photo, and keep it safe.
  3. A passport picture: The attached passport picture must be two inches by two inches. It must also be recent (within the last six months), against a plain white background, clearly show your face and neck, be free of glares and shadows, and be centered. You cannot wear headgear that covers your face, thick-rimmed or tinted glasses, or have anyone else in the picture. Additionally, you must have a neutral facial expression.
  4. A return or round trip ticket: Failure to present this can have your visa application denied.
  5. Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay: Brazilian immigration authorities must ensure you can support yourself during your stay. Thus, you must attach financial statements.
  6. Proof of accommodation: You must show where you will stay, whether in a hotel or with friends.
  7. Proof of employment status: If you are self-employed, you should attach an affidavit on the same, plus your tax assessment. Employees should attach letters from their employers stating their positions and salaries. Students should prove their status through enrolment letters from their universities.
  8. Proof of Brazil visa fee payment.

The Brazil visa requirements for U.S. green card holders are also as above. Moreover, all Brazil visa applicants are subject to the following additional Brazil visa requirements in 2023:

   –  Tourist: Travel itinerary,

   –  Business: Letter of invitation from the host company, a letter from the employer stating the purpose of the visit, a conference invitation letter,

   –  Student: FBI background check and enrolment letter from Brazilian school,

   –  Family reunion: FBI background check and proof of relationship with the Brazilian resident or citizen, e.g., birth certificate,

   –  Work: FBI background check, approval from the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, and a work contract.

   –  Retirement: An FBI background check, health insurance, and an original birth certificate,

   –  Digital Nomad: An FBI background check and health insurance.

The above documents justify your travel purpose and are thus essential when you apply for Brazil visa. The consulate can also ask you to provide more documents if needed.
