Taking your kids on a cruise is a fun idea. After all, cruises have tons of activities for kids that they can enjoy as they bond with other kids. And you can also have fun participating in the adult activities, knowing your kids are safe and happy on board. But before you excite the little ones with your upcoming plans, do kids need a passport to go on a cruise?

Do Kids Need a Passport to Go on a Cruise?

There are two types of cruises, and their passport requirements differ, as shown below:

  1. Closed-Loop Cruises: These cruises start and end at U.S. ports. As such, your child does not need to carry a valid passport book. Instead, they can rely on other U.S.-issued documents such as passport books or their birth/ naturalization/ citizenship certificate. The goal is to prove their U.S. citizenship, and these documents can serve this purpose.
  2. Standard Cruises: These cruises start or stop at a non-U.S. port, which means your kids will travel abroad. In that case, they must hold a valid passport book. The passport should comply with the validity requirements at the destination, be in good condition, and have enough blank pages.

Kids not traveling with their primary guardians should also carry notarized letters of consent from their primary parent or guardian. Failure to have this document can land you in legal trouble.
