Cancun has everything a tourist would ever want – the beautiful sandy beaches that stretch beyond what the human eye can perceive, the fine hotels, the explorative cuisines, the vibrant nightlife, and the great shopping experiences. It’s a resort town that boasts tons of activities that will fill your itinerary to the brim. But do you need a passport to go to Cancun? Let’s cover this and help you plan your trip:

Do You Need a Passport to Go to Cancun?

Whether you need a passport or not depends on how you plan to get to Cancun. Three options are available:

  1. By Car: In this case, you will need a passport to go to Cancun. Because you will have ventured beyond the immigration area, you will also need to process a Mexican tourist visa which you can get at the border. Please note that you can use either a passport book or a card. Some other forms of ID (e.g., green cards and state-issued IDs) can also work. But to know what applies in your case, check with the Mexican authorities before leaving the U.S. Minors entering Mexico via road do not need a passport, but you will need their original birth/ naturalization/ citizenship certificates.
  2. By Air: All travelers to Cancun by air must hold valid passports. Unlike road travel, where you can use a passport card or a book, you must have a valid passport book. This regulation also applies to minors. When traveling with minors, ensure you have notarized consent forms from their parents or guardians.
  3. By Sea: If you are entering Cancun via a cruise ship, you may or may not need to have a passport. People on closed-loop cruises do not need a passport and can use other forms of ID to visit the ports of call. Examples include state-issued IDs and birth certificates. Those who wish to venture beyond the ports of call must have a valid passport. To know what applies to you, check with your cruise line.

In all cases where you need a passport, it should be valid at the time of entry and have one blank page per stamp.

When Is the Best Time to Go to Cancun?

Visiting Cancun during the summer is not advisable as the weather may be too hot. Most people prefer visiting Cancun in the cooler months between December and April. The weather is cool at this time, yet the sea is calm and conducive to swimming and other water activities. It’s also a great time to sail or cruise the area. As long as you are not visiting Cancun during the heavy rainy season, you are sure to enjoy yourself.
