Brazil is a haven for Americans who want to enjoy good weather, bask in sunny beaches, hike in natural tropical forests, gaze at beautiful waterfalls, fall in love with history, or even be part of the incredible carnivals. But regardless of your reason for traveling to this country, you must have a visa. We look at the different types of Brazilian visas and what you need to qualify for each.

Unveiling all the Types of Brazilian Visas

Until April 10th, 2025, Americans can visit Brazil on short visits without a visa. However, the entry requirements from April 10th, 2025 will change, requiring all U.S. citizens to have the relevant visa. Below are the applicable types of Brazilian visas:

1. Visit Visas

These visas apply to U.S. citizens who want to visit Brazil for 90 or fewer days. While the cap is 90 days, the visa validity depends on the time stipulated by the Consular Staff once they have reviewed your visa application. The categories are as follows:

  1. Tourist Visa: The visit visa is also known as the tourist visa. But this sub-category refers to recreational visits. Examples include sightseeing, visiting loved ones, attending cultural events, being part of research seminars, engaging in non-paid sports events, etc. Anyone under this visa type cannot engage in income-producing activities; otherwise, they will breach their visa terms.
  2. Transit Visa: Americans transiting through Brazil may need this visa if they will depart the international airport area or clear immigration while in Brazil. If so, you will need an onward ticket and must meet the entry requirements for your next destination.
  3. Business Visa: Transit and tourist visas do not allow applicants to engage in paid activities. Thus, people attending business conferences, negotiations, transactions, etc., should apply for this visa. It allows them to make money in business deals without contravening their visa terms.

Anyone applying for the above types of Brazilian visas must prove that they do not wish to establish residency by providing justifying documentation.

2. Temporary Visas

Visit visas only allow Americans to visit Brazil for 90 or fewer days. As such, people engaging in long-term activities are better off getting temporary visas as follows:

  1. Work Visas: Americans hired by Brazilian companies can get this visa. However, this is contingent on approval by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor.
  2. Digital Nomad Visas: People who work remotely can live in Brazil under this visa type. They must prove that they make money abroad and can support themselves.
  3. Retirement Visas: Brazil welcomes retirees who have attained the minimum retirement age and wish to establish residency in Brazil.
  4. Student Visas: People enrolled in Brazilian schools, e.g., for graduate studies, can get visas enabling them to live like residents in the country.
  5. Family Reunion Visas: Close family members, e.g., parents and children, can apply for this visa to join Brazilian residents or citizens temporarily or permanently.

The terms of these types of Brazilian visas depend on the travel purpose. For example, a digital nomad visa is renewable if the applicant can prove they have financial means to support themselves and are still making money remotely.

3. Diplomatic/ Official Visas

These visas apply to people on diplomatic or official duties. Documentation explaining the nature of the duties is integral to qualifying for such visas.

Requirements for all the Types of Brazilian Visas

All Brazilian visa types have minimum requirements that applicants must meet to qualify for approval. At the general level, they are as follows:

  1. A Passport: All applicants must provide a valid passport with at least six months of validity when applying for a visa. The passport must be in good condition, have at least two blank visa pages (excluding the endorsement pages), and should not have been reported lost or stolen. TVP handles expedited passport services for applicants who fall short of these requirements.
  2. A Passport Picture: You must attach a recent picture (taken in the last six months) measuring two inches by two inches. Headgear is only allowed if you have a religious basis, provided it does not cover your face. Glasses are allowed if you have a prescription. All other general passport photo requirements apply.
  3. A Brazil Application Form Receipt: Every visa applicant must complete the visa application form. Here, you detail when and why you will visit Brazil and include your personal details. You must sign and submit the form to get a confirmation receipt, which you should print.
  4. A Return or Round Flight Ticket: Visit visa applicants must have such a ticket to prove they do not wish to establish residency in Brazil.
  5. Proof of Employment Status,
  6. Proof of Accommodation, and
  7. Proof of Enough Funds to Cover Your Stay.

The Consular Staff will also ask for supporting documentation for your visa type, e.g., a student visa applicant should have an enrolment letter and an FBI background check.
